Players of the Week: Abreu, Woodruff

White Sox first baseman José Abreu and Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff have been named Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet for the week of May 24-30.

All-time winners: AL | NL

Abreu has led the White Sox through their recent hot streak, going 9-for-24 with two doubles, two home runs (both over 420 feet) and 10 RBIs as his team went 6-1 in its homestand against the Cardinals and Orioles.

The American League’s reigning MVP is the third White Sox player to take home the honor in 2021, following Yermín Mercedes and Carlos Rodón, who each won in April. This marks the sixth time Abreu has been named a Player of the Week.

Woodruff continued his early NL Cy Young campaign this week with 14 scoreless innings, giving up just five hits (all singles), walking two and striking out 18 of the 48 batters he faced while lowering his ERA to 1.27 -- second in the Majors only to Jacob deGrom’s 0.71. Woodruff’s opponents’ slash for the week was .109/.146/.109.

Woodruff is the first Brewer to win Player of the Week since Keston Hiura for the week of July 21, 2019, and the first Brewers pitcher to take home the award since Shaun Marcum in 2011 (May 22-28).
