Soto and Adams' back-to-back HRs historic

Juan Soto and Matt Adams led the Nationals to a much-needed comeback win over the Marlins on Friday -- and they did so by setting some homer history.

Washington trailed Miami, 9-8, when Soto went deep off reliever Tayron Guerrero’s 100.1 mph fastball for a three-run, go-ahead dinger. It was the fastest pitch hit for a homer by a Nationals player in the pitch tracking era, dating back to 2008 … until Adams followed up in the next at-bat by taking Guerrero’s 101.5 mph pitch out to right for an insurance run. With not one, but two taters off triple-digit heat, the Nationals made some dinger history.

The Nationals are the first team in the pitch tracking era (again, since 2008) to hit a pair of homers off 100-plus mph pitches in the same game. In fact, no team had homered off multiple 100-plus mph pitches in a single season before Washington on Friday night.

Miami catcher Jorge Alfaro kept his club alive with a monster 112.6 mph, 456-foot blast off Nationals closer Sean Doolittle in the top of the ninth, both tying for the Marlins’ longest homer and setting a new mark for the club’s hardest-hit dinger of 2019. But it was not quite enough; the Nationals held on for a wild, 12-10 win thanks to some extremely quick reflexes from Soto and Adams.
