CINCINNATI -- The Reds acquired third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes to improve their infield defense, and the veteran did his part quite well. On Sunday, Hayes' efforts were rewarded when he was named the winner of a National League Gold Glove Award.

It was the second career Gold Glove for Hayes, who also won it in 2023 while with the Pirates. The last Reds player to win the award was catcher Tucker Barnhart in 2020, and the only other Cincinnati third baseman to earn one was Hall of Famer Scott Rolen in ’10.
The other two third-base finalists were Ryan McMahon from the Rockies (traded to the Yankees on July 25) and Matt Shaw of the Cubs.
Hayes, 28, was traded from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati on July 30 for lefty reliever Taylor Rogers, shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura and cash. Hayes made his Reds debut on July 31 and played all of his remaining 52 games at third base. He made only one error with his new team (five overall), and it happened in his debut against the Braves.
For the fourth time in five seasons, Hayes led all Major League third basemen with 19 Defensive Runs Saved over 152 games. He also led MLB third basemen in Outs Above Average with 21, the third time he's done that in the past four seasons. His 21 OAA was tied for third among all big league position players. Only Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. (24) and Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong (24) were better.
Hayes' .987 fielding percentage was also tops among MLB third basemen.

“I think Hayes has solidified us at third base like nobody’s business. And he’s swung the bat plenty good enough. That’s been terrific," Cincinnati manager Terry Francona said in September.
The Reds had two NL Gold Glove finalists, with first baseman Spencer Steer joining Hayes. However, the award for that position went to Atlanta's Matt Olson.
