SAN FRANCISCO – The Giants are still awaiting word on Logan Webb after the ace pitcher left Tuesday’s game against San Diego with a left knee injury.

Webb threw only 62 pitches in four innings and allowed a season-high-tying six runs, as his ERA rose to 5.06. After the game, the two-time All-Star downplayed the injury and refused to use it as an excuse for his performance.

Webb was not in the Giants clubhouse when the media was there prior to Wednesday afternoon’s game against the San Diego Padres. That’s normal for pitchers on a day game after having pitched the previous night, so it’s not an indication that the injury is already viewed as serious. Webb was scheduled to be seen by the team’s medical staff when he did get to Oracle Park.

Webb had said postgame Tuesday he had been dealing with the left knee discomfort "for a little while."

Losing Webb for any extended time would be a big blow to the Giants' entire pitching staff, which has been racked by injuries this season. Hayden Birdsong underwent Tommy John surgery in the spring and is out for the year. Left-handed reliever Sam Hentges (shoulder surgery) is on a rehab assigment, and Erik Miller was recently placed on the injured list with a lower back strain.

Webb has been the Giants' workhorse and has led the National League in innings pitched each of the previous three seasons, twice leading all of baseball.
