Mallex lands on DL with viral infection

ST. PETERSBURG -- Rays outfielder Mallex Smith has a viral infection and has been put on the 10-day disabled list.
According to Rays spokesman Dave Haller, Smith is being treated with antibiotics in a local hospital. He is not expected to have a prolonged hospital stay.
The Rays will make a corresponding move before Saturday's game against the Red Sox.
Smith is hitting .307 with two home runs, 31 RBIs and 27 stolen bases on the season, and he's batted .385 in 16 games since taking over the leadoff spot.
