No. 1 Sox prospect Mayer homers off Eovaldi

One day soon, Marcelo Mayer, the Red Sox’s No. 1 prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline, will be hitting homers at the big league level. We got a preview of such an event Monday.

Mayer showcased his 55-grade power during an intrasquad game by homering off of Boston’s Opening Day starter, Nathan Eovaldi.

Mayer, the fourth overall selection in the 2021 MLB Draft, put together a .275/.377/.440 slash line with three home runs last season in the Florida Complex League. He is the No. 14 overall prospect in baseball. He has seen only one at-bat in Spring Training game action, but he’s still doing damage this month.

Eovaldi and the Red Sox will open their 2022 season in the Bronx against the Yankees on April 7.
