Despite hand injury, Reynolds does part

First baseman Mark Reynolds was not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Indians because of a left hand injury. But he was there when the Rockies needed him.
Inserted in the seventh inning for defensive purposes, Reynolds displayed an underappreciated part of his game when he stretched for shortstop Trevor Story's bounced throw for the final out of a 3-2 victory over the Indians at Progressive Field.
At the end of the sixth inning of Tuesday night's series-opening 4-1 loss, Reynolds had to dive around pitcher Germán Márquez -- who was attempting to cover the bag on Reynolds' difficult fielding play -- and was hurt tagging the Indians' José Ramírez.

Gerardo Parra, an outfielder with limited experience at first base, started at first and batted cleanup Wednesday. But after left fielder Alexi Amarista batted in the top of the seventh, manager Bud Black went to Reynolds in Amarista's spot, and Parra moved to left field.
Reynolds went 0-for-2, but the move paid off in the 12th, after the Rockies took the lead on a Charlie Blackmon home run.

With Tyler Chatwood trying to complete the save, Ramirez hit a bouncer to Story, who had to make a leaping throw any way he could. Reynolds made the catch and kept his foot on the bag before tumbling happily to the infield dirt.
Before the game, Black said he did not want to use Reynolds.
"He got the hand compressed on Ramirez's knee," Black said. "I think it sort of smashed his hand into the ground."
Worth noting
• Closer Greg Holland was held out of a couple of games a week ago when he sustained a cut on his right index finger in what Black called a "kitchen accident." But Holland has had a win and a save since, so no one is saying the finger was a factor in his blown saves in the Rockies' past two games. He has blown just three all season.
"He's fine," Black said.
