Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd sustained a fluke knee injury at home with his left meniscus, manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday. Boyd has been placed on the 15-day injured list and will undergo surgery, with a timeline for his return to be determined. The injury occurred when Boyd was sitting down to play with his kids.

Reliever Trent Thornton was added to the roster with Boyd sidelined. Left-hander Charlie Barnes has been designated for assignment.

Boyd has gone 2-1 with a 6.00 ERA in five starts this season. He spent time on the IL earlier this season with a left biceps strain.
