Conforto leads charge as Mets claim series

NEW YORK -- On a cold, rainy September day in Flushing, Queens, the Mets made some last-minute lineup adjustments due to the weather that put a damper in the plans -- but the offense took matters into its own hands and got the job done in a 6-4 win over the Phillies at Citi Field on Sunday.
Michael Conforto led the offense, going 2-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs, tying a career high.
"He looks really good at the plate," Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. "He's covering the plate. When he starts hitting those balls the opposite way like he did today, you know he's in a really good spot. I'm really pleased with where he's at. I know the hitting coaches are, and I'm sure that he's glad that things are clicking for him."
With Jacob deGrom scratched from his scheduled start due to bad weather, right-hander Corey Oswalt got the nod for the spot start against Philadelphia.

Oswalt went three innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits while striking out four. Drew Gagnon came on in the fourth and added two innings of scoreless relief. Right-handers Drew Smith and Seth Lugo did their part to close out the win.

"Corey [Oswalt] was just ready to go," Callaway said. "We gave him about a 40-minute heads-up I think, and he just went out there and warmed up and was ready. They all knew that they needed to be alert from inning one."

The Phillies jumped on Oswalt early when Rhys Hoskins hit his third home run of the series, a two-run shot to left field in the first inning.
The Mets got on the board in the bottom of the first frame when Amed Rosario led off with a triple and Conforto drove him home with an RBI single to the right side of the infield. Conforto would then plate three more runs on a go-ahead homer in the fifth inning after Jeff McNeil's game-tying RBI single to left field that brought in Dominic Smith.

Austin Jackson tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning with an RBI double to left field that brought in Brandon Nimmo.

MITEL REPLAY OF THE DAY
The original ruling on the field for the three-run blast from Conforto was a two-run double. The umpires initiated a crew chief review, and the call on the field was overturned and deemed a home run.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Not only did Conforto lead the offense, but his defense was stellar as well. With the Mets leading, 5-3, in the sixth with runners on first and third with two outs, Carlos Santana popped a foul ball down the left-field line. Conforto hustled to the spot and reached over the wall and into the stands to make the grab.

SOUND SMART
The Mets have won 21 of their last 27 series against the Phillies and are 48-25 vs. them since 2015.
"I think that we've obviously played well in the win-loss column, but I think that they're a big rivalry," Callaway said. "I think that our guys get pumped up to go play them and we've played solid baseball against them."

Conforto showed off his defensive range in the third inning, getting back to the warning track to make a leaping catch at the wall to rob former Met José Bautista.

After the rain put a damper on his plans Sunday, deGrom has had an extra day's rest and will be eager to face the Marlins in the series opener Monday night at 7:10 p.m. ET. deGrom leads the Majors with a 1.68 ERA and has held his opponents to three runs or fewer in 25 straight starts. Right-hander Jeff Brigham will take the mound for Miami at Citi Field.
