The Reds have acquired more infield depth, with Mike Freeman coming over from Cleveland in a trade for cash on Friday. He will be a non-roster invitee to Major League camp.

Freeman, 33, was batting .333 (5-for-15) with one home run in six Cactus League games this spring.

A five-year veteran who has also played for the D-Backs, Mariners, Dodgers and Cubs, Freeman is a career .232/.315/.330 hitter over 156 games.

Cincinnati’s infield depth has been tested of late with infielder candidate Max Schrock suffering a right calf injury and first baseman Joey Votto’s positive test for COVID-19 this week.

Freeman mostly plays second base and third base, but he also has some limited big league experience at shortstop, first base and left field.

The Reds could move second baseman Mike Moustakas to first base in Votto’s absence, but would need someone to play second base. No. 5 prospect Jonathan India could also fill that role.
