Final Vote candidates featured on MLB.TV

With All-Star rosters set, aside from the Final Vote, fans can get their first glimpse of those participating in the 88th Midsummer Classic on July 11 in Miami today on MLB.TV with 10 games on the slate.

Here's what to watch for today (all times ET):
The chase continues: NYM@WSH, 6:05 p.m.
The Mets look to continue their climb toward .500, having gone 7-3 in their last 10 games and 14-14 in June. First place in the National League East has been held by the Nationals all but three days this season. A big part of that has been because of Final Vote candidate Anthony Rendon. Heading into Sunday's night game against the Cardinals, the third baseman was batting .298 with 16 homers and 50 RBIs.

For the Mets, Steven Matz turned in his best start of the year Wednesday in Miami, when he threw seven scoreless innings, but more telling, he tossed his slider for the first time since surgery in October to remove a bone spur in his left elbow, giving him a full disposal of five pitches. If he feels more encouraged in throwing the pitch -- he did so just four times his last time out -- he'd complement it with what's been a strong four-seamer, which has generated just a .133 average against, according to  Statcast™.
Stephen Strasburg is also coming off a strong start, in which he struck out 13 and picked up his ninth win. While batters are hitting him harder this year -- his 88.1 mph exit velocity and 8.8 percent barrel rate are both increases from last year, per Statcast™ -- he still sports a 3.51 ERA and the Nats are 12-4 in games he's pitched.
AL East duel in the Bronx: TOR@NYY, 7:05 p.m.
After appearing to be on the rise following a sluggish April, Toronto came within a game of .500 six times in June, but the Blue Jays have lost eight of their last 11, and remain in the American League East cellar. Yet despite a topsy-turvy season, Toronto entered July with confidence.
"There's a lot of optimism," Darwin Barney said after the Blue Jays lost Saturday to the Red Sox. "Guys still believe in the club and who we have here. Nobody is thinking that things aren't going to work out for us. I feel like, at this point, obviously the clock is ticking on the season, but we feel that the men in here have the ability to make a run."

Blue Jays righty Marcus Stroman is coming off a career-high 119 pitches in his last outing, in which he threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings against the Orioles. He squares off against Masahiro Tanaka, who is 1-1 with a 2.92 ERA in his last four starts, during which he's held opponents to a .674 OPS.
Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius, a Final Vote candidate, is looking to make a splash so he can get to Miami for the Midsummer Classic.

Showdown in St. Louis: MIA@STL, 7:15 p.m.
The Cardinals entered last weekend further away from .500 (four games) than first place in the NL Central (3 1/2 games), which says much about the state of the division. They're still within striking distance despite what's been one of the most trying seasons under John Mozeliak, who was promoted Friday from general manager to president of baseball operations.

At home against the Marlins, Adam Wainwright will be seeking his third straight quality start. In his last two starts, he gave up just three earned runs on 10 hits in 13 1/3 innings, with 13 strikeouts and three walks.
For Miami, lefty Jeff Locke is still seeking his first win with the Marlins in what will be his seventh start. Through his first six, he has a 5.52 ERA in 29 1/3 innings. What's been an issue has been runners on base, as Locke has surrendered an opposing .400 batting average and 1.275 OPS in such situations.
Marlins first baseman Justin Bour has a chance to stay in Miami for the All-Star Game presented by Mastercard as a Final Vote candidate.

What might be an encouraging sign for reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello is that he makes his next start in Arlington, where he is 4-2 with a 3.19 ERA. He's allowed 69 runs this season, worst in the Majors.
Rangers lefty Martín Pérez will come off the 10-day disabled list (fractured tip on right thumb) on Monday for his first outing since June 22.

The game will feature two Final Vote candidates in Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts and Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus.

Castillo on the rise: CIN@COL, 8:10 p.m.
In a struggling rotation, Reds right-hander Luis Castillo is quickly becoming one of the team's most consistent starters. In two starts since getting called up from Double-A Pensacola, he has a 3.38 ERA.
Rockies right-hander Jeff Hoffman is coming off one of his best starts of the season, when he held the Giants to two runs over 6 2/3 innings and struck out six.
The game will feature Rockies first baseman Mark Reynolds, who is a Final Vote candidate, and has been a major reason for the club's return to prominence in the National League West.

Kennedy looking for consistency: KC@SEA, 10:10 p.m.
Although Ian Kennedy gave up a home run for the 11th straight start in his last outing, he went seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits against the Tigers. It marked the first time he pitched at least seven innings since April 22.

Meanwhile, Mariners rookie Andrew Moore was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to make his second MLB start. He allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings for the win two weeks ago against the Tigers.

The game will include Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas, who is a Final Vote candidate. He's having a breakout season, batting .270 with 22 home runs and 49 RBIs.
