A's living in luxury with multiple closers

MESA, Ariz. -- With four closing options in tow, A's manager Bob Melvin isn't opposed to picking more than one ahead of Opening Day.
"We might not have one particular closer," Melvin said Wednesday. "You saw the way bullpens were used in the postseason. Now, it's easier to do it in the postseason with days off, but we have the luxury here … we may do things a bit differently here."
Veteran Ryan Madson handled most of the closing duties last year, but left-hander Sean Doolittle and right-handers Santiago Casilla and John Axford have experience in the role as well. Melvin said he wouldn't be afraid to use one of them for upwards of two innings one night and give them the next night off, while another tries for a potential save.

"But, at this point," Melvin said, "we're still trying to calculate where we're going with it.

"The tough part is identifying who goes where as spring goes along, but the flip side of that is it's quite a luxury to have. We feel like we have a really good bullpen, and how that works out we're not sure yet. We'll have that conversation as spring goes along."
Worth noting
• Casilla remains delayed by visa paperwork in the Dominican Republic because he was a late sign by the A's, and he may not be in camp until next week. Right-hander César Valdez was the only other pitcher absent from Wednesday's first workout for pitchers and catchers, after missing his connection in Miami.
