Assault charge against Odubel Herrera dropped

ATLANTA -- Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera had a domestic assault charge dropped on Wednesday morning in Atlantic City Municipal Court.

Herrera agreed to participate in counseling for 60 days, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Phillies are not commenting until Major League Baseball concludes its investigation following a charge filed on Memorial Day, when Herrera’s girlfriend said she had been assaulted at a casino. She did not want to proceed with the case. The Inquirer reported that Atlantic City’s prosecutor found insufficient evidence to continue the case without her testimony.

Earlier this week, the league extended Herrera’s administrative leave through Friday. The Commissioner’s Office has the authority to discipline a player, independent of that player being convicted or pleading guilty to a crime.
