CINCINNATI – Cardinals manager Oli Marmol was ejected from Monday’s nightcap to the day-night doubleheader in the 10th inning of St. Louis’ 6-5 10-inning loss to Cincinnati at Great American Ball Park.
It was his third ejection this season, and the 24th of his career, dating back to his first year as Cardinals skipper in 2022.
Marmol took exception with a pair of calls that went against the Cardinals in the decisive 10th.
The Cardinals thought they had runners on first and second with none out when Joshua Báez was hit on the right hand by an Emilio Pagán fastball. But first base umpire Edwin Moscoso ruled that Báez swung, keeping him in the batter’s box, where he eventually struck out.
After a José Fermín walk, Masyn Winn had a full count and was ready to take first on a checked swing. But an appeal to Moscoso sent Winn back to the dugout with the second out. Marmol put two fingers up, indicating his objection to the two calls.
“I said, ‘Two’, and he thought that was enough for an ejection,” Marmol said.
Cincinnati would get out of the inning without St. Louis pushing across the free runner when Everson Pereira grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the inning. Elly De La Cruz ended the game in the bottom of the tenth with his first career walk-off hit, a double past third baseman Blaze Jordan, scoring free runner Tyler Stephenson with the winning run.
