DENVER -- Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol was ejected from Friday’s series opener vs. the Rockies after arguing with home-plate umpire Doug Eddings regarding Cole Carrigg’s inside-the-park home run to make it 4-3.
Marmol appeared to believe that Carrigg missed third base as he rounded the bag and headed for home.
The Cardinals made a pitching change after one more batter, lifting Hancel Rincon from his Major League debut after allowing three runs in one-third of an inning.
The Cardinals couldn’t challenge the call, as they’d already challenged the safe ruling at third on a TJ Rumfield triple in the previous at-bat. Replays indicated that Marmol had reason to argue the call, with Carrigg apparently missing the bag.
Marmol continued to engage with Eddings after the pitching change and was summarily ejected for the fourth time this season.
The Rockies scored two more times in the inning, taking a 5-4 lead and leaving starting pitcher Andre Pallante with a no-decision after five innings of one-run ball in his return from the injured list.
