ST. LOUIS -- The Pirates activated outfielder Oneil Cruz from the concussion injured list and designated for assignment left-hander Andrew Heaney prior to Tuesday's game vs. the Cardinals.
Additionally, right-hander Dauri Moreta was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday while outfielder Ronny Simon was optioned to Indianapolis following Monday night's game.
“There's a reason that Andrew Heaney has 10 years [of MLB service time], and he has the talent to pitch in the big leagues, and we saw that earlier in the year,” Pirates manager Don Kelly said. “He had a lot of really big outings for us, a lot of really good outings. Recently, they haven't been as good and [he] moved to the 'pen. The one thing that you can say about him is he is a true pro in the way that he handled everything every single day whether he had a good outing or a bad outing.”
Cruz had a triple, three RBIs, two walks, a stolen base and two runs scored in two rehab games with Double-A Altoona.
“We see the talent,” Kelly said of Cruz. “You see what he's able to do, and when we can get him into the lineup, and he's got a chance to impact the offense every single time that he steps to the plate.”
Moreta is in his second stint with Pittsburgh this season (also August 2-10). He had a 1.69 ERA (5.1ip/1er) and nine strikeouts in four appearances with Indianapolis from August 14-24.
Right-handed pitcher Justin Lawrence and left-handed pitcher Tim Mayza have also had their rehab assignments transferred from Single-A Bradenton to Indianapolis.
There are now 39 players on Pittsburgh’s 40-man roster.
