NEW YORK -- Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong is known for hitting the long ball. He has a team-leading 17 home runs to back it up. But during the second game of the day/night doubleheader against the Mets, a contest in which Chicago won, 10-5, Crow-Armstrong showed he can play small and help the team score a run.
The game was tied at 3 in the fourth inning. With runners on first and third, no outs and left-hander Sean Manaea on the mound, Crow-Armstrong bunted the ball over the head of third baseman Bo Bichette to bring Pedro Ramírez home for the go-ahead run.
“The goal is to push it hard in between the pitcher and third base, because [shortstop Francisco] Lindor is up the middle and Bo is playing in,” Crow-Armstrong said. “Luckily I hit it hard enough. The goal is to get it to the left side. It was a bit of luck and intentionality, I guess.”
Manager Craig Counsell had his opinion on Crow-Armstrong’s RBI knock.
“Really lucky. Don’t assign any skill to that,” the skipper joked.
