1983 World Series roster
Roster turnover happens every season. Three years after the 1980 World Series championship, there were a few holdovers from that club. Marty Bystrom, Steve Carlton, Tug McGraw, Ron Reed, Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt, Greg Gross and Garry Maddox. Those eight were on the 1983 World Series roster.
- Getting to the World Series was bizarre.
- From Opening Day through Aug. 31, 40 different players appeared in games.
- Only one player among the starting eight was under 30 years of age.
- Seven players were 38 or older; 32.1 average age for roster.
- Twelve different pitchers made starts, including two rookies.
- With the team in first place (43-42) on July 18, manager Pat Corrales was replaced by Paul Owens.
- A club record 22 wins in September, including an 11-game winning streak, led to the NL East title.
- The club advanced to the World Series, beating the Dodgers, 3-1; L.A. dominated the Phils during the season, 11-1.
- Baltimore and Philly met in the “I-95” World Series. The Phils won the opener, but the Orioles swept the next four games.
