Phillies strikeout records
“Struck him out!”
How many times have we heard a Phillies broadcaster emphatically say that? Probably more than we could ever imagine.
Well, here’s everything you want to know about strikeout records by Phillies pitchers. More than 1,000 have pitched for the Phillies dating back to when the franchise was established in 1883. Alphabetically, from Kyle Abbott to Mike Zagurski.
There are some familiar names and some surprises. Many are from the past. The newest one is Héctor Neris, who reached a new career high for Phillies relievers this past season.

Twenty-year-old right-hander John Coleman led Phillies pitchers in strikeouts (159) during the franchise’s initial season (1883). It's miniscule when you consider he faced 2,574 batters in his 538 1/3 innings. Keep in mind pitchers threw underhanded back then and the “pitchers’ box” was 50 feet from home plate. Overhanded throwing began in 1884. The current 60’6” distance from the mound to home plate was instituted in 1893.
