Fall League prospects -- including MLB's No. 2 -- take BP in Halloween costumes

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The baseball season can be a grind. For those in attendance at the Arizona Fall League, they’ll be suiting up well into November, almost nine months from when spring camp began. Which is why it’s so important to keep things loose – especially on Halloween.

So if you’ve gotta suit up, why not do it in costume?

The Fall League and Oct. 31 have long been a perfect combination that has led to players dressing up in the holiday spirit during batting practice. (Don’t worry, they found their uniforms in time for first pitch.)

“It's awesome, a lot of fun,” said Max Anderson, the Tigers’ No. 9 prospect. “I mean, we’ve got such a great group here that we’re playing with, it's making it a lot of fun to play baseball.”

The Scottsdale Scorpions sit both in first place atop the 2025 AFL standings and the unofficial podium of best dedication to the holiday. Here’s who tapped into their creativity and delivered an early treat during the team’s batting practice session ahead of Friday’s contest at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick:

Kevin McGonigle (DET No. 1/MLB No. 2): Donatello of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Will Bush (HOU): Pint of beer

Joseph Sullivan (HOU No. 6): Superman

Nick Morabito (NYM No. 16): Raphael of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Sam Petersen (WSH No. 24): Astronaut

Walker Martin (SF No. 27): Escaped prisoner

Ethan Petry (WSH No. 8): Leonardo of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

There are few among us more superstitious than baseball players. So in the case of Petersen, who went 4-for-4 with his third homer of the AFL campaign during Scottsdale's 8-3 win over Salt River, one can wonder if he'll have to dial up the space suit as a regular item in his closet over the final few weeks.

"I didn't know what to expect -- all these different guys from different orgs -- but we have fun in here," said right-handed pitcher James Hicks (HOU No. 26), "and I think anybody that comes to the game can hear it -- we're having a good time."
