SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Tony Beasley is back as the Rangers third-base coach after being out all of last season while getting treatment for rectal cancer.
Beasley will celebrate his return by performing The Star-Spangled Banner on Opening Day at Globe Life Park.
"It's an honor," Beasley said. "I'm grateful because Opening Day is special. There is a lot going on at the park. To do it is an honor. I plan to do it justice."
Beasley is an accomplished singer who has sung the national anthem before. He did so for the Pirates in 2009 and a couple of times in the Minor Leagues. He grew up singing in his church choir and continues to do so when he is able.
"Most people who know me from church know my singing," Beasley said. "That's mainly where I sing. I have been singing my whole life."
The Rangers asked Beasley to sing on Opening Day last year and again in the playoffs. Both times he said he wasn't strong enough physically to do the job right. Now he is back to full strength.
"A lot of people say it's a tough song to sing," Beasley said. "I'm not going to say it's not tough. But I'm comfortable with it. I have my own rendition. I'm not going to disrespect it, but there will be a few twists and turns."
Arlington mayor Jeff Williams will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. He was instrumental in the city of Arlington's partnership with the Rangers to begin construction on a new ballpark.
There will be a flyover of T-38's from Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls and the colors will be presented by an honor guard from the Texas Rangers Law Enforcement. The United States Armed Forces Wings of Blue Parachute Team will skydive onto the field with the 2016 American League West Division Championship flag.
