A first-inning single to right field was just the beginning of a very special afternoon for infielder Mikey Romero at Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.
Here's how the rest of the day played out for the Red Sox's No. 9 prospect: home run, single, single, double, single. That incredible hitting display in Worcester's 19-0 victory over Lehigh Valley at Polar Park made Romero the fifth Minor Leaguer to record a six-hit game this season and the third to pick up six hits in as many at-bats.
At the big league level, only two Red Sox -- Rafael Devers in 2019 and Nomar Garciaparra in 2003 -- have recorded six hits in a game since 1982.
Romero, Boston's first-round Draft pick in 2022, has now homered on consecutive days, giving him 11 long balls in 86 games with the WooSox this year. His bat supported right-hander Gage Ziehl, Boston's No. 17 prospect, who tossed 5 2/3 innings, struck out eight, walked none and allowed only two hits in the first Triple-A appearance of his pro career.
