ATLANTA – An equalizing solo shot by Marcelo Mayer with two outs in the seventh gave the Red Sox hope for what would have been a rare comeback win this season.
Instead, the offensively challenged Sox didn’t score again and took a 3-2 defeat in 10 innings to the 31-14 Braves on a walk-off double by Mike Yastrzemski against Tyler Samaniego.
With a chance to take the lead in the top of the 10th, Boston couldn’t push the automatic runner past third.
Mayer gave the Red Sox the jolt they needed when he launched a solo shot to right with two outs in the top of the seventh. It was the second homer of the season for Mayer, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
In the sixth, down 2-0, Mickey Gasper helped Boston chip into the lead with a two-out RBI single to left.
Connelly Early turned in the latest strong performance in his rookie season, holding the heavy-hitting Braves to two runs (both on solo shots) over five innings. The lefty walked none and struck out six while throwing 86 pitches.
Spencer Strider had a comparable line for the Braves, holding the Sox to three hits and a run over 5 1/3 innings in which he walked three and struck out four.
