DETROIT -- The White Sox had plenty of chances during Saturday’s contest against the Tigers at Comerica Park.
Chances, as in putting the leadoff hitter on base in six of the first seven innings. They finished 4-for-18 with runners in scoring position but did just enough to claim a 4-3 victory.
Here are the only numbers that ultimately matter. The White Sox currently have a 4 1/2 game lead over the Tigers and the Twins, with the Guardians sitting 5 1/2 behind in the American League Central. Both the Guardians and Twins played later on Saturday.
They have clinched a series win over the Tigers (60-63), which already marks a weekend success. But they can really put the hammer down in the division in Sunday’s finale behind staff ace Sean Burke.
Andrew Benintendi delivered the game-winning hit on Saturday, singling off the glove of shortstop Kevin McGonigle to score Randal Grichuk in the seventh. That came after the Tigers elected to intentionally walk Miguel Vargas with first base open against Drew Sommers.
Colson Montgomery’s two-out, two-run double on the ninth pitch of an at-bat against Troy Melton in the third gave the White Sox a 3-1 lead.
