Red Sox-Yankees game postponed Saturday, rescheduled for Aug. 29 twin bill

NEW YORK -- This weekend’s rivalry series between the Red Sox and Yankees has been shortened to a two-game set, as Saturday night’s game was postponed due to a forecast of sustained rain.

The game will be made up at 1:05 p.m. ET on Aug. 29, in what will be the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Fans with paid tickets to Saturday’s game can use them for the makeup game on Aug. 29 or exchange them for tickets to a similar regular-season game at Yankee Stadium (subject to availability) as described in the Yankees’ rain check policy, which may be found at www.yankees.com/raincheck. Tickets can be exchanged online only and cannot be exchanged in-person at the Yankee Stadium Ticket Office.

Lefty Ranger Suarez, scheduled to pitch for Boston on Saturday, will take the ball in Sunday’s 1:35 p.m. ET contest.

Righty fireballer Cam Schlittler, one of the top pitchers in the game so far this season, will pitch for the Yankees on his regularly scheduled day. Will Warren, scheduled to start for the Bronx Bombers on Saturday, will now open a three-game series in Cleveland on Monday.

Lefty Connelly Early would have pitched Sunday for Boston in what would have been a rematch against Schlittler from Game 3 of last year’s American League Wild Card Series, which the Yankees won. Early, who is having a strong rookie season, will likely pitch Monday night when the Sox open a three-game series at Tropicana Field.

According to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, the game might not have been able to start until roughly 10:30 p.m. Saturday if they had waited out the rain.

The postponement prevented viewers from being able to hear Derek Jeter, David Ortiz and Alex Rodriguez serve as analysts during the game on FOX along with play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt.

Icons in the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry during their playing days, Jeter, Big Papi and A-Rod typically do studio work for FOX, so this broadcast would have been a novelty.

“We had a good one for you,” Rodriguez said as he exited the stadium.

The Yankees swept the Red Sox at Fenway from April 21-23 in the first rivalry series of the season.

Boston won the opener of this series, 5-3, on Friday night, behind a strong pitching performance from Sonny Gray and a towering two-run homer by Willson Contreras.

The 37-26 Yankees trail the Rays by one game in the American League East. The Sox (27-35) are in last place, 10 1/2 games back.

Complimentary (COMP) tickets and tickets obtained via the Commissioner’s Initiative for Kids for Saturday’s game must be used for the rescheduled game. COMP tickets or equivalent tickets bear no cash value and do not have any additional benefits that may be offered to ticket(s) with a dollar value.
