Carrigg crashes into ivy, then runs for coffee

CHICAGO – Rockies No. 6 prospect Cole Carrigg is getting the full Wrigley Field experience. He homered Monday night, and Wednesday was part of the Rockies’ tradition of low-service time guys making a run to a nearby Starbucks for the clubhouse.

On Tuesday night, his experience was a mixture of beauty, tradition and pain.

In the seventh inning of the 5-2 victory over the Cubs, Carrigg made the key defensive play by leaping into the ivy of the center-field wall to catch Michael Busch’s deep fly ball against lefty reliever Brennan Bernardino. The catch likely saved a run, since there was a runner at first base.

The ivy-covered outfield wall is iconic. But the wall behind the foliage is brick, and plants don’t offer much padding. Carrigg was in just his eighth game since being promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque, but he knew he was asking for pain.

“It felt like brick – it was definitely pretty hard, not much cushion with the ivy,” Carrigg said, still smiling after the game. “That’s a good highlight, for sure. Making a catch in the ivy is pretty cool.”
