KANSAS CITY -- Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony’s plan to take a significant step forward in his rehab on Monday was halted when he took some swings and felt some soreness in his ailing right wrist.

The hope was for Anthony to start a gradual program of swinging early this week that would line him up for a return in the coming days.

That will be pushed back at least a little. The Sox will re-evaluate the situation when they return to Fenway Park for a homestand that starts on Friday.

“Swung a little bit and had some soreness, so, for the time being we're probably gonna back off [swinging] until we get through the off-day [on Thursday],” said Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy. “Obviously, we’re not gonna have him swing through soreness and discomfort, so not as good a news today, but we'll back off and see what happens after the off-day with a few more days of rest. “

Anthony’s attempt to start a hitting program took place on the two-week anniversary of when he suffered the injury hitting a check-swing foul ball in Detroit.

The 22-year-old did have some progress on Friday in Atlanta, when he started playing catch, something he did again on Saturday and Monday.

With the Red Sox (19-27) in a massive offensive slump, they look eagerly for Anthony to return to the lineup.

But all parties involved know that rushing it won’t be productive.

Anthony, who had a solid rookie season (batting line of .292/.396/.463 in 303 plate appearances) before a season-ending injury to his right oblique, had struggled to make the same impact (.229/.354/.321 in 130 plate appearances) in the early stages of 2026.

It seemed like he was starting to make strides in the days before the injury.
