PHOENIX -- Corbin Carroll grimaced while running out of the batter's box during the sixth inning Tuesday night and later was shown on the game broadcast talking with one of the team's athletic trainers in the dugout.
"He's got like some low back discomfort," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. "But it's that time of the year. I just had a conversation with the medical team, trying to figure out if it's the right thing to do to get him off his feet, and Corbin wants to play. Corbin wants to get in there, and he wants to go out and play, and I'm fine with that."
Carroll stayed in the game, which wound up a 7-1 loss to the Phillies, the Diamondbacks' third loss in their last four games as they trail the Padres by one-half game in the race for the final NL Wild Card spot.
At this part of a long baseball season, no player is 100 percent healthy, and Carroll is one of those who does not like to take days off, especially in the middle of a postseason hunt.
Lovullo said Carroll should be in the starting lineup for Wednesday afternoon's series finale.
"That's how he's wired," Lovullo said. "It's that time of the year where you’ve got to put it on, put it together, and go out and play. And Corbin's going to do that for us."
Lovullo's discussion with the medical team was about whether a day off Wednesday combined with Thursday's team off-day would be beneficial for Carroll.
"I’ve got to be smart about certain things, certain guys," Lovullo said. "But Corbin knows his body as good as anybody, and he wants to play. So I'm not going to get in the way of that."
Carroll has been in a bit of a slump at the plate of late. Over his last 15 games, he is slashing .189/.297/.321, but Lovullo said it has nothing to do with the back issue.
"I don't think so," Lovullo said. "He has not complained about it one time. I think he's just got to swing at good pitches. That's what it comes down to. If he's swinging at the pitches that he's looking for, he's going to impact the baseball, and that's the same for anybody."
