NEW YORK -- The Rockies placed right-hander Ryan Feltner on the 15-day injured list with right ulnar nerve inflammation and called up left-hander Sammy Peralta from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday. Feltner exited Thursday afternoon’s 10-8 loss to the Padres after two innings.
The 29-year-old, coming off a solid performance against the Dodgers with five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings, pitched a clean first with two strikeouts. In the second, he yielded a single to Manny Machado before walking Xander Bogaerts on four pitches to put a runner in scoring position. A Miguel Andujar double promptly brought in both runners to give San Diego a 2-1 advantage, but Feltner induced two groundouts before striking out Jake Cronenworth.
Feltner was limited to six starts last season by first a back injury, then a right shoulder injury that he sustained while working his way to health from the back issue.
Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer is hoping Feltner will not be sidelined for a long period of time.
“The MRI looked pretty good. We are hoping [Feltner is on the IL for the minimum 15 days],” Schaeffer said. “It’s just a little elbow inflammation.”
The trip to the IL marks the fifth consecutive season Feltner has been sidelined by an injury. Last year, for example, Feltner missed significant time because of back spasms before he was sent down to Albuquerque in early July. Then he sustained a right shoulder injury while working his way back to health from the back issue.
As for Peralta, he is playing for his third Major League team (White Sox and Angels are the others). In seven games for Albuquerque this season, Peralta is 4-0 with a 3.72 ERA. He is expected to come out of the bullpen and pitch multiple innings.
