NEW YORK -- Ryan McMahon was scratched from a scheduled Minor League rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Wednesday, as several Yankees may be dealing with an outbreak of food poisoning, manager Aaron Boone said.
Trent Grisham remains scheduled to play for Double-A Somerset against Hartford, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. ET.
Boone said outfielder Spencer Jones is among the ailing players, which is why he wasn’t in Wednesday’s lineup against the Tigers. Boone said others are experiencing issues, including some in Wednesday’s lineup, but declined to name them.
“We got hit with food poisoning or some kind of bug [Tuesday] night, so we’ve got IVs going and everything today,” Boone said. “It’s been an interesting week on a lot of fronts. … I got a lot of messages about overnight stuff from a number of guys.”
Grisham has been out since June 13 with a strained right hamstring, while McMahon was placed on the injured list June 24 (retroactive to June 22) with a peritonsillar abscess.
McMahon may be cleared to play in a Minor League game on Thursday, with both hoping to be activated for Friday’s opener against the Twins.
Considering the situation, Thursday’s day off figures to come at a good time for the Yankees, who will have played 16 consecutive contests since their most recent break on June 15.
“The season waits for nobody,” Boone said. “No one feels sorry for you.”
Additionally, Jazz Chisholm Jr. returned to the lineup on Wednesday, playing second base. Boone said Chisholm was available only in an emergency situation on Tuesday after being forced to exit Monday’s game following a collision with right fielder Jasson Domínguez.
Chisholm passed all concussion tests and received clearance to play from the team’s medical staff.
“He came by my office even before the game last night and was in good spirits,” Boone said.
