LOS ANGELES -- After it was initially ruled a home run that hit off Angels right fielder Jo Adell’s glove and then his head before going over the fence on Tuesday, the scoring decision was officially changed by Major League Baseball to a four-base error on Friday.
The Rockies' TJ Rumfield was credited with a solo homer off right-hander Grayson Rodriguez in the fourth inning but it was appealed by Rodriguez and overturned by MLB three days later. A player or team can request a scoring change within 72 hours of the game. Rumfield is now 0-for-1 in that at-bat and Rodriguez will have an earned run taken off his ledger.
It’s the second time a four-base error has involved Adell. It also happened his rookie season in 2020, when a ball went off his glove and over the fence against the Rangers.
Adell, though, has worked hard to become a better defensive outfielder since his debut and was a Gold Glove finalist in 2024 and memorably robbed three home runs in one game against the Mariners on April 4.
To his credit, Adell was immediately at his locker to talk to reporters after Tuesday’s 8-2 loss at Angel Stadium and took accountability for his misplay.
“It's one of those things where how it happened looks crazy,” Adell said. “It looks like I've never played in the field before, which is disappointing, because it's beyond the truth, but it is what it is. I'm the only one that really knows what happened. I was out there, and it happened to me, so it is what it is. I've got to just keep going, and as a team, we've got to keep going.”
