Shohei Ohtani memorabilia of any kind is seemingly always setting records at auction -- just like his play on the field. His latest, from the 2026 World Baseball Classic, did it again.
The jersey Ohtani wore in Japan’s 13-0, pool-play-opening win over Chinese Taipei on March 6 sold via MLB Auctions on Sunday night for $1,500,010. It destroyed the record for the most ever paid for an Ohtani jersey at auction, according to ESPN. The previous high was $249,999, set for a game-worn 2024 Dodgers jersey that he signed with “‘24 NL MVP,” according to The Athletic.
Sunday’s sale was also a massive increase from the $126,110 paid for a game-worn Ohtani jersey from the 2023 Classic. The 2026 jersey earned 298 bids, more than double that of the 2023 sale (125).
Ohtani hit a grand slam in the second inning of the win over Chinese Taipei and went 3-for-4 in total with five RBIs. Overall, he hit .462 in the classic with three home runs and an 1.842 OPS. Japan’s 2023 title defense ended in the quarterfinals against Venezuela, the eventual 2026 champions.
A four-time MVP, Ohtani has long been arguably the biggest name in the sport, and the craze for collectors’ items bearing his name reflects that. He’s had two cards sell for more than $2 million at auction over the past few months, including a 1-of-1 Topps Chrome Gold Logoman Autograph Card that sold for $3 million in December.
Ohtani’s jersey follows in a line of noteworthy items from this year’s thrilling WBC that have fetched high prices at MLB Auctions. Team Italy’s espresso maker will go final on Monday, with the current high bid clearing $5,000. Japan teammate Munetaka Murakami also had a jersey go for more than $8,500, and an Ohtani ball from an RBI single cleared $8,000.
