CLEVELAND -- The White Sox placed shortstop Tim Anderson on the paternity list and recalled right-hander Jose Ruiz from Triple-A Charlotte to take Anderson’s roster spot on Wednesday.

Anderson, who was scratched from Monday’s lineup when his wife Bira went into labor, can remain on the list one to three days.

“He came in the office [on Monday] and looked a little disheveled,” manager Rick Renteria said. “I was like, 'OK, what’s wrong?' And he said his wife was getting ready to have a baby. Obviously, something you can’t control.”

Renteria said he expects Anderson to be available for Friday's series opener with the Mariners, after Thursday's scheduled home opener was postponed due to inclement weather.

“Now, things can change between now and then, but I still expect him to be back,” Renteria said.

Anderson started the season 4-for-12 from the plate over the White Sox first three games, racking up a double, an RBI and a stolen base. Last season, he batted .240 with 20 home runs and 64 RBIs over 153 games.

Ruiz, who the White Sox acquired off waivers from the Padres in December, has compiled a 4.15 ERA over 4 1/3 innings last season. He made his Major League debut for San Diego last season.

“He’s obviously available, and hopefully we’re in a good situation where we’re able to use him,” Renteria said.

Renteria expects updates on Jay soon
Outfielder Jon Jay has been out since March 24 with a right hip injury, and Renteria said the White Sox should have an update on Jay upon returning to Chicago.

“I expect to know more once we get back home," he said. “Obviously that’ll be forthcoming once he sees whomever he needs to see, and they put together how he’s doing.”

Jay signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the White Sox in the offseason after spending 2018 with the Royals and D-backs. Jay batted .268 in 143 games last season. Daniel Palka (0-for-14 in four games this season) has taken Jay’s place in the outfield.
