Possible mid-June return in view, Edman (ankle) starts rehab

LOS ANGELES -- After all the trouble his right ankle has given him for more than a year, Tommy Edman has taken a deliberate approach to his rehab from the procedure he had to repair a ligament and remove bone spurs last November. He has slowly checked box after box, and at last, he's closing in on a return to the Dodgers.
Edman began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, playing five innings at second base and going 1-for-2 with a single. The utility man is expected to be with the Comets for the maximum 20 days allowed, putting him in line to return around mid-June.
The Dodgers are optimistic that Edman is past the point of pain tolerance. They're looking for him to build stamina as he prepares for everyday big league action.
"The question is how he feels tomorrow after playing five innings," manager Dave Roberts said. "It's not really a pain tolerance, it's more the recovery part of it for Tommy right now."
Over the past few years, Edman dealt with nagging ankle issues, which landed him on the injured list twice in 2025. He sought a long-term solution this past offseason, opting to undergo surgery and be out for Opening Day.
Initially, the Dodgers had seemed hopeful that Edman would be ahead of Kiké Hernández, who was recovering from surgery on his left elbow and made his season debut on Monday. But as Edman went through his running program, he continued to experience soreness in his ankle. That led the team to ease up on his progression for a spell.
But over the past couple of weeks, Edman seemed to turn a corner. He ran the bases at what looked like top speed while the Dodgers were in San Diego last week, then reported to the team's complex in Arizona to take live at-bats over the weekend. He came away feeling good and joined the Comets in Sugar Land.
While Edman is building up with Oklahoma City, he will primarily play second base, with some center field mixed in. That should be roughly how his playing time breaks down when he's back with the Dodgers as well.
