Just three games into his Triple-A career, Braden Montgomery is already making his mark.
Montgomery, the White Sox’ No. 1 prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 29 overall, tallied his first multi-hit game at the level Thursday in a 16-1 win for Charlotte over Jacksonville at Bragan Field at VyStar Ballpark. Once a key piece of the Garrett Crochet trade, the 23-year-old outfielder was showing off with his 50-grade hit tool and 60-grade power.
Montgomery went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, his first two Triple-A RBIs and a walk. He got the better of top Marlins prospect Thomas White (MLB No. 12) twice, with a first-inning walk and a single to center that he hit at 97 mph.
In the fifth inning with the bases loaded, the switch-hitting Montgomery tugged a 1-0 slider into the right-field corner at 102.4 mph, plating two on a double.
His final knock came in the sixth against a position player, reaching above the zone to smack a double to the opposite field. Even on what was tracked as a 72.8 mph slider, Montgomery was still able to turn it around at 90.1 mph.
The lone batted-ball out for Charlotte’s right fielder was a 93.2 mph groundout in the eighth. Again, the exit velocity is a little eye-catching, considering the pitch came in at 59 mph.
Montgomery is only continuing what was a scorching-hot start to the campaign. He earned Double-A Southern League Player of the Month honors in April with a .310 batting average and .998 OPS, including four home runs.
