BOSTON – The Yankees expect to activate Trent Grisham from the 10-day injured list during their homestand that begins Monday, manager Aaron Boone said on Saturday, noting that the outfielder’s stabilizing presence has been missed.
“He settles things a lot,” Boone said.
Grisham has been on the injured list since June 13 with a strained right hamstring. He traveled with the club to Boston and has been performing baseball activities at Fenway Park, including onfield batting practice and running bases.
Boone said he anticipates Grisham will need to play in at least one Minor League rehab game before being activated.
With Grisham shelved, the Yankees have been rotating starts in center field among Cody Bellinger, José Caballero, Spencer Jones and Max Schuemann.
“When [Grisham is] there, then Belli is where he needs to be [in left field],” Boone said. “I think we certainly miss him. It’s a good thing to see other guys and find out about them, to carve out roles. They’re people that are capable, especially in short bursts.”
Grisham is slashing .232/.341/.406 (52-for-224) in 66 games, with eight home runs and 35 RBIs.
Additionally, Boone said third baseman Ryan McMahon is improving as he deals with the after-effects of a peritonsillar abscess.
McMahon returned to New York for workouts and should be activated from the injured list when eligible on Friday.
“When he was leaving [Friday] morning from the hotel, he was feeling another day better,” Boone said. “He should be doing baseball activities now all week, and I would expect him when the 10 days are up.”
McMahon is slashing .210/.269/.360 (39-for-186) in 69 games, with eight home runs and 23 RBIs.
