Trevor Story and Sandy Alcantara served as catalysts for their respective teams over the past week. Their Herculean efforts didn’t go unnoticed, as they were named the Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet on Monday.

After struggling through the first 34 games of his Red Sox tenure, Story broke out in a big way this week with one of the best seven-game stretches in recent MLB history. Story batted .360 with six home runs and an eye-popping 14 RBIs -- a number that’s even more impressive considering he came into the week with just 15 RBIs through the first month and a half of the season.

While the best game of Story’s week arguably came on Thursday when he clubbed three home runs and drove in seven runs, the best moment came a day later when he launched a grand slam into the Green Monster seats that was caught by former Red Sox hero Jonny Gomes.

After his torrid week (in which the Red Sox also went 6-1), Story is now batting .226 on the year with seven home runs and 29 RBIs. This is Story’s fourth Player of the Week Award, with his last win coming in June 2019.

Sandy Alcantara’s Player of the Week nod comes on the heels of his complete-game win against the Braves on Sunday, when he scattered six hits and three unearned runs while striking out seven in a 4-3 win over the Braves. In his May 16 start, Alcantara went eight innings and allowed only one run on three hits in the Marlins’ 8-2 win over the Nationals. In total, Alcantara finished the week with an ERA of 0.53 over 17 innings to go along with an opponent batting average of .150. He also retired 29 consecutive batters across those starts; the final 20 he faced against Washington and the first nine against Atlanta.

The complete game was Alcantara’s fourth since 2019, which is the second-most in baseball over that time frame. He’s also thrown 504 2/3 innings in that span, which is the fourth-highest in baseball. On the year, the six-year veteran is 4-2 with a 2.11 ERA over an MLB-leading 59 2/3 innings. This is Alcantara’s first Player of the Week Award.
