BALTIMORE – The White Sox defense came up big Monday night in an 8-2 series-opening win over the Orioles in support of right-hander Sean Burke.

Burke went toe-to-toe with Orioles starter Shane Baz, with the contest tied 2-2 into the bottom of the fourth.

With one out, Orioles right fielder Dylan Beavers ripped a long line drive to deep right-center field. On the dead run, White Sox center fielder Tristan Peters crashed into the wall to make the catch and rob Beavers of likely extra bases. According to Statcast, Peters traveled 85 feet in 4.7 seconds and reached a sprint speed of 29.1 feet per second.

Peters went into the wall hard, but after the catch, he got up and retrieved his cap, shaking off the collision. Teammate Braden Montgomery came over from right field with a smile and a fist bump to check on Peters, who was OK.

Burke was impressed by the catch and said pitchers notice when their teammates lay it on the line to make every play to help the club win.

"He's been awesome all year, obviously, out there,” Burke said. “I think that’s kind of the mentality of our team. You see guys like [Sam] Antonacci getting hit by pitches, Peters is running into the wall, [Miguel] Vargas is diving into the netting, the tarp over there.

“Guys are playing hard, and everybody wants to do everything they can to make the play. As a pitcher, that’s super comforting and nice to see your defense doing everything they can. Not only me, but everyone on our staff is giving everything they got every time they go out there."
