NEW YORK -- It’s impossible to say what, exactly, the rest of this season will bring. The Mets are still missing umpteen players to injury and still making plenty of mistakes. They’ve talked openly about Clay Holmes’ broken fibula as a practical and emotional weight on their season.

But Sunday, for the second straight day, the Mets set all that aside, saving their most important contributions for the most crucial moments.

With the team down to its final out in the ninth, Tyrone Taylor hit a game-tying three-run homer. An inning later, Carson Benge hit a walk-off fielder’s choice to steal a 7-6 Subway Series victory from the Yankees. The Mets took two of three at Citi Field, winning when trailing after eight innings for the first time since Pete Alonso homered in Game 3 of the 2024 Wild Card Series in Milwaukee.

They had been 0-91 in those situations since that time.

Trailing for nearly the entire game, the Mets rallied with a pair of hits against Yankees closer David Bednar to lead off the ninth. With two outs, Bednar hung a first-pitch curveball to Taylor, who launched it just inside the left-field foul pole to tie the game.

That erased all the frustrations of the previous eight innings, including a Bo Bichette dropped popup, another brief Freddy Peralta start and a shaky long relief performance from Sean Manaea.

In the 10th, the Mets put runners on the corners with one out to Benge, who hit a bouncing ball to the right side. Playing with a five-man infield, two Yankees collided in pursuit of the baseball, eliminating any chance of a play at the plate.
