Covey exits start in 3rd with oblique soreness

PHOENIX -- White Sox starter Dylan Covey exited Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the D-backs at Chase Field in the third inning with left oblique soreness. He will be re-evaulated on Wednesday.
Covey made only six starts for Double-A Midland last season because of the same injury.
"It just felt like a light pull on that last pitch I threw," Covey said. "Where I'm at now, doing some ice and stuff, I feel a lot better compared to last year. I could hardly move last year. Trying to stay optimistic. Hopefully this will be a short little recovery."
"We'll check it out tomorrow," manager Rick Renteria said. "Hopefully it's nothing too lingering."
Covey retired David Peralta to open the third, but then signaled to catcher Kevan Smith, who signaled to Renteria and head athletic trainer Herm Schneider. After a visit to the mound, Covey was replaced by Chris Beck.
Covey allowed four runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings, yielding home runs to Jake Lamb and Chris Herrmann, falling to 0-4 with an 8.12 ERA in eight starts. The White Sox have off-days each of the next two Thursdays to potentially work around Covey, but they also have a doubleheader on Friday against the Tigers.
"I think the next stop in the timeline is to see how it feels in the morning," Covey said.
