BOSTON -- Willson Contreras had a very short day at Fenway Park on Sunday, logging just one inning during Boston's 4-1 loss after he was hit on the right hand in his first at-bat.
The Red Sox first baseman had a 1-1 count, but after a successful ABS challenge, Rays starter Nick Martinez came inside with a 94 mph sinker. The team announced that Contreras had sustained a right hand contusion, which they will follow up with imaging to determine the severity of the injury.
Contreras, who is hitting .259 (35-for-135) with a team-leading eight home runs and 23 RBIs, was attended to by interim manager Chad Tracy and an athletic trainer, shaking his hand as he slowly made his way to first base.
Contreras was replaced on defense by Andruw Monasterio to start the second inning.
