NEW YORK -- Rays third baseman Yandy Díaz left Sunday’s 13-5 loss to the Yankees at Yankee Stadium after being hit on the left hand by a pitch thrown by Yankees reliever Chance Adams. The injury was deemed a left hand contusion after X-rays came back negative, and Diaz is day to day.

“We’ll see when he wakes up tomorrow. I’m sure the off-day will be a somewhat welcome for him,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said.

The Yankees were leading, 12-5, when Diaz came to the plate with two outs in the seventh inning and was struck by a 2-2 pitch. He was taken out of the game and replaced by pinch-runner Andrew Velazquez.

Cash didn’t think Adams hit Diaz on purpose. There has been tension between the two clubs in recent weeks. On Friday, CC Sabathia tried to hit Austin Meadows with a pitch.

“Look, [Adams is a] young pitcher. He is trying to make a pitch,” Cash said.
