George Lombard Jr. walked up to the door that opens to a new Minor League season ... and smashed through it with the force of a sonic boom.

MLB's No. 29 prospect homered leading off the bottom of the first inning, but that was only an appetizer for the 20-year-old, who flirted with a cycle during a career-high five-hit performance on Friday night. It was an epic season debut for Lombard, who scored three times and stole a base to propel Double-A Somerset to an 18-2 win over visiting Portland at TD Bank Ballpark.

The Patriots' offense was relentless early, giving the Yankees' top-ranked prospect multiple chances to complete his first cycle, but the rising star instead settled for an unforgettable opening to 2026.

Lombard's first roundtripper on the fourth pitch he saw set the tone for the entire evening for Somerset. The Miami native was three-quarters of the way to a cycle by the fourth inning, but the trek for a triple fell short. Lombard checked in with two more singles to complete his first game with four or more hits since May 23, 2024, for Single-A Tampa.

The breakout performance on Day 1 of the season was a welcome sight for Lombard, who despite zooming up the prospect rankings hit a speed bump after his promotion to Double-A last year. The son of the former big leaguer by the same name tore through the first month for High-A Hudson Valley, but he unsurprisingly scuffled during his introduction to upper Minors and the Eastern League.

Lombard slashed .215/.337/.358 in 108 games for Somerset, but he also walked 64 times, swiped 24 bases and showed an ability to adapt. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder saw his average dip to .205 on Aug. 15, but he posted a .797 OPS over his final 26 games and earned 20 free passes, good for a .388 OBP.

Lombard carried that over into Spring Training, where he enjoyed a solid spring in the field and showed some extra-base pop, collecting three across 34 plate appearances for the Grapefruit League Bronx Bombers. Although there was no serious consideration given he'd break camp with the big club, his overall performance and demeanor impressed the Yankees.

If Lombard's season debut was any indication, flashes of stardom might soon turn into fixtures. The tools are loud, the instincts are being sharpened and the impact is already starting to show up where it matters most. For a player who won't turn 21 until June, the ceiling feels less like a distant projection and more like an approaching reality.
