Moncada's bat sparks Sox past Padres

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Yoán Moncada's bright future was on full display Friday night, as the White Sox downed the Padres, 3-1, at the Peoria Sports Complex.
The 21-year-old prospect, acquired from Boston in the Chris Sale trade this offseason, put Chicago on top with an RBI triple in the top of the third. He helped tack on another run in the sixth when he singled and came around to score.

For the Padres, sinkerballer Luis Perdomo tossed two scoreless frames in his spring debut, recording two strikeouts and four groundouts. White Sox right-hander Dylan Covey, who has a chance to win a roster spot this spring, matched Perdomo with two shutout innings of his own.

Moncada opened the scoring with his triple in the third, but he was cut down at the plate by San Diego shortstop Luis Sardiñas one batter later. Sardinas, who is competing for the starting job this spring, went 2-for-2 with a pair of nice defensive plays. The Padres want him to take a more assertive approach to the position this season, and he appears to be doing so.
"In the last couple days, I've started to see it, and I couldn't be more pleased," said Padres manager Andy Green. "That is what we desperately want to see from him."
Meanwhile, the Padres' late-inning trio of Brandon Maurer, Ryan Buchter and Brad Hand made their spring debuts. Maurer allowed an unearned run, while Buchter and Hand each worked 1-2-3 frames.
