A's Acquire RHP Mike Fiers from Detroit

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland A's have acquired right-handed pitcher Mike Fiers from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for two players to be named later or cash considerations, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster the A's designated left-handed pitcher Jeremy Bleich for assignment.
Fiers was 7-6 with a 3.48 ERA and .258 opponents batting average in 21 starts with Detroit. He has walked just 26 batters in 119.0 innings and his average of 1.97 walks per nine innings is eighth lowest in the American League. The 33-year-old right-hander has held the opposition to a .165 batting average with runners in scoring position, which is tied for third lowest in the AL. Fiers is 3-3 with a 2.57 ERA over his last 12 starts after going 4-3 with a 4.78 ERA over his first nine starts.
Fiers was originally selected by the Brewers in the 22nd round of the 2009 draft and has pitched for Milwaukee (2011-15), Houston (2015-17) and Detroit (2018) in eight seasons in the majors. He was dealt to the Astros at the trading deadline in 2015 and went 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA in 10 games with Houston down the stretch, including a no-hitter on Aug. 21, 2015. Fiers signed with the Tigers as a free agent following the 2017 season and is 49-53 with a 4.06 ERA in 162 games, 144 starts, in his career.
Bleich made his Major League debut with the A's this year and allowed two runs on two hits in 0.1 innings in two relief appearances during his stint with Oakland from July 13 to 21. He is 1-1 with a save and a 2.91 ERA in 31 relief appearances with Triple-A Nashville.
