Christian Yelich named NL Player of the Month for September
Milwaukee Brewers All-Star outfielder Christian Yelich has been voted the Budweiser Presents National League Player of the Month for September, and Los Angeles Angels All-Star outfielder Mike Trout has been voted the Budweiser Presents American League Player of the Month for September. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.
With today's NL Central Tiebreaker still in the balance -- and a potential NL Triple Crown still in the realm of possibility -- Yelich posted a slash line of .352/.500/.807 with 24 runs scored, 31 hits, six doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 33 RBI, 24 walks and six stolen bases across 26 games played to claim his first career NL Player of the Month Award. Among qualified NL hitters in September, Christian is on pace to finish his dominant month first in RBI, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage; tied for first in runs scored and home runs; tied for second in extra-base hits (18) and stolen bases; third in walks; and tied for third in triples. This is Milwaukee's first Player of the Month Award this season, and the first since Ryan Braun in September of his MVP-winning 2011 season.
On September 17th against the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park, Yelich hit for the cycle for the second time this season in an 8-0 win. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the California native joined Aaron Hill (2012), Babe Herman (1931), Tip O'Neill (1887) and John Reilly (1883) as the only players in MLB history to hit for the cycle twice in the same season. Yelich, who previously accomplished the feat on August 29th at Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park, is the first player ever to do it twice in one season against the same Club. In Saturday's critical contest against the Detroit Tigers, the 26-year-old recorded his second multi-homer game of the season (also August 28th) to lead the Brewers to a 6-5 victory. The outing capped an 11-game game stretch in which Yelich slashed .486/.620/1.216 with 15 runs, five doubles, two triples, six home runs and 20 RBI. Following his historic month at the plate, Yelich is on pace to become the seventh player (10th time) in MLB history to slash at least .350/.500/.800 with 10 home runs and five stolen bases in a single calendar month, joining Richard Hidalgo (September 2000), Larry Walker (April 1997) and Barry Bonds (September 1992), as well as Hall of Famers Jeff Bagwell (July 1994), Babe Ruth (May 1930, July 1921, July 1920, June 1920) and Lou Gehrig (June 1930). Led in large part by their slugger's great month at the plate, the Brewers advanced to the Postseason for the first time since 2011.
Others receiving votes for NL Player of the Month included third baseman Anthony Rendon (.352, 24 R, 19 XBH, 26 RBI) of the Washington Nationals and outfielder Michael Conforto (.286, 8 2B, 9 HR, 29 RBI) of the New York Mets.
The Budweiser Presents National League Player of the Month, Christian Yelich, and the Budweiser Presents American League Player of the Month, Mike Trout, will each receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, for their accomplishments.
