D-backs acquire INF Marrero from Red Sox

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired INF Deven Marrero (@Dmarrero305) from the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The D-backs also selected the contract of RHP Fernando Salas and designated RHP Albert Suárez for assignment. The D-backs' 40-man roster is now at 40.
"We are excited to add a player of Deven's versatility to our roster," said Hazen. "His ability to play all 4 infield positions will be valuable addition."
Marrero, 27, has appeared in 109 games over parts of 3 Major League seasons with the Red Sox (2015-17), hitting .208/.259 OBP/.309 SLG with 9 doubles, 5 home runs, 30 RBI, 17 walks and 7 stolen bases, including a .710 OPS vs. left-handed pitching. Defensively, he has made appearances at third base (70), second base (20) shortstop (16) and first base (1). He appeared in a career-high 71 games for Boston in 2017, hitting .211/.259 OBP/.333 SLG with 9 doubles, 4 home runs, 27 RBI, 12 walks and 5 stolen bases. He batted .291/.344/.600 with 5 doubles, all 4 of his home runs and 13 RBI vs. lefties.
The right-handed batter has hit .245/.312 OBP/.332 SLG with 101 doubles, 7 triples, 20 home runs, 179 RBI, 193 walks and 90 stolen bases in 534 games over parts of 6 Minor League seasons. He was ranked by Baseball America as the Best Defensive Infielder in the Red Sox' system for 4 consecutive years (2013-16), and was named Boston's organizational Minor League Defensive Player of the Year in 2014. He has a lifetime 76.3 (90-for-118) stolen base percentage and was named the Red Sox' Minor League Base Stealer of the Year in 2013.
Marrero attended Arizona State University, where he was the 2011 Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year and a 3-time all-conference performer. He owns the Sun Devils' freshman record with a .397 average in 2010.
Salas, 32, has made 10 appearances for the D-backs this spring as a non-roster invitee, allowing just 1 run in 10.0 innings (0.90 ERA) with 8 strikeouts and 2 walks. He owns a lifetime 21-24 record with 30 saves, a 3.85 ERA and 441 strikeouts and 136 walks in 452 games over parts of 8 Major League seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals (2010-13), Los Angeles Angels (2014-16, '17) and New York Mets (2016-17).
Suárez, 28, was 1-1 with a 6.57 ERA (9 ER in 12.1 IP) in 6 games (2 starts) with the D-backs this spring. He was acquired as a Rule 5 Draft selection from the San Francisco Giants on December 14, 2017.
