Major League Baseball today announced its league-wide efforts to mark Patriot Day and commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, honoring the victims, families and first responders through community service, special programming and on-field tributes across all Clubs.
Leading MLB’s off-field observances, MLB and the New York Mets will co-host a meal-packing event at Citi Field on Friday, September 11, 2026. Organized in partnership with the nonprofit 9/11 Day as part of the "UNITE For Good" initiative, the nation’s largest annual day of service, the efforts bring together great former players, MLB and Mets staff, New York area college baseball and softball players and community volunteers to pack thousands of meals for tri-state area families facing food insecurity. High-profile attendees leading the service effort will include Mets alumni Hall of Famer Mike Piazza, David Wright, John Franco, Al Leiter, Robin Ventura, Todd Zeile, Adam Ottavino and Dellin Betances and MLB Network’s Harold Reynolds. MLB Network will highlight the morning’s efforts on-site, broadcasting the Emmy Award-nominated MLB Central from Citi Field*.*
Alongside morning service events, MLB will honor September 11th across all ballparks with dedicated tributes and pregame ceremonies. During all games on September 11th, players, managers, coaches and umpires will wear special New Era caps with a "We Shall Not Forget" side patch, while the Toronto Blue Jays will feature caps with both Canadian and American flags. In addition, the Yankees and Mets will wear first responder caps with team logos during the Subway Series. Ballparks will also feature customized base jewels and official lineup cards, with home teams hosting observances such as a league-wide moment of silence, an MLB Network produced scoreboard dedication video HERE and "God Bless America" during the seventh-inning stretch. Nationally, MLB Network and ESPN Unlimited’s Game of the Day will carry the September 11th Subway Series Game at Yankee Stadium at 7 p.m. ET, with the game airing locally on YES and SNY in New York.
Documenting baseball's role during one of the nation's pivotal historical periods, MLB Network will premiere When America Took the Field on Thursday, September 10th at 10 p.m. ET. Produced by MLB Network’s Emmy Award-winning production staff alongside former Mets infielder Todd Zeile, the two-hour documentary examines how the sport provided hope, healing and unity following the attacks. Featuring exclusive interviews with Hall of Famers, players, broadcasters and impacted families, the film revisits iconic moments including Mike Piazza’s emotional home run at Shea Stadium, highlighting the sport's enduring resilience. Leading up to its premiere on MLB Network, the film will be shown at Citi Field on September 10th in an event for the Mets’ season ticket holders and select guests. MLB Network will re-air the film on September 11th following the Yankees vs. Mets game, plus on September 12th at 10 a.m. ET.
