Giants select CF Hunter Bishop with their first round selection (10th overall) in the 2019 First-Year Player Draft

San Francisco, Calif. - The San Francisco Giants selected center fielder Hunter Bishop (Arizona State) with the tenth overall selection in the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, the club announced tonight.

Bishop, 20, had a breakout season with the Sun Devils in 2019, hitting .342 with 67 runs scored, 16 doubles, four triples, 22 home runs and 63 RBI in 57 games. He sits fifth nationally with 22 home runs, just five shy of ASU’s single season record (27 by Mitch Jones in 2000). The 6-foot-5, 210-pound junior is a semifinalist for the NCAA’s prestigious Golden Spikes award. He was named Perfect Game and D1Baseball’s Midseason Player of the Year and was tabbed as a Pac-12 All-Conference First Team selection. He’s ranked in the Pac-12 top-10 in every major offensive category.

Bishop is only the second Sun Devil this decade to be selected in the first round of the MLB Draft, joining former Arizona Diamondback Deven Marrero, who went 24th overall to the Boston Red Sox in 2012. Other notable ASU baseball alumni include Barry Bonds, Reggie Jackson, Dustin Pedroia, Jason Kipnis and Andre Ethier.

Bishop also played for the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod League last year.

Bishop attended Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, CA, the same high school as Barry Bonds and Tom Brady. While on Serra High’s baseball team he helped lead them to the 2016 WCAL Baseball Championship. He was a two-sport athlete at Serra and won state championships in both baseball and football in the West Catholic Athletic League. The star wide receiver originally committed to play football at Washington before deciding to play baseball at Arizona State.

He was selected in the 24th round (714th overall) of the 2016 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres, but elected to go to Tempe. Hunter is the younger brother of Mariners outfield prospect Braden Bishop, who made his Major League debut earlier this season.

In 2014, Hunter and his brother, Braden, started the 4MOM foundation when their mother, Suzy, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s. It has since partnered with Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles in the hope of helping to find a cure.

GIANTS SELECT 1B LOGAN WYATT WITH THEIR SECOND ROUND SELECTION (51ST OVERALL) IN THE 2019 FIRST-YEAR PLAYER DRAFT

With the 51st overall pick, the Giants selected infielder Logan Wyatt from Louisville. The left-hander hit .291 with 11 doubles, nine home runs, 52 RBI and 68 walks in 63 games for the Cardinals in 2019. His 68 walks led the ACC Conference, while his .466 OBP ranked fourth in the ACC. Wyatt is just one free pass shy of Louisville’s single-season record of 69 walks set by Kevin Malone in 1980. The 6-4, 230-pounder also earned All-ACC second team honors at first base this season.

Last season, Wyatt earned All-American honors after hitting .339 with 22 doubles, six home runs and 69 RBI. The Louisville, Kentucky native also ranked third in the nation in walks with 63 and led the ACC Conference with a .487 OBP. Wyatt was named to the 2018 NCAA All-Lubbock Regional Team and 2018 All-ACC First Team.

In 2018 he played in the Cape Cod Baseball League for the Orleans Firebirds and hit .305 with 20 runs, five doubles, four home runs, 18 RBI and 29 walks.

The Cardinals will play East Carolina in the Super Regional round this weekend in a best-of-three series, with the winner advancing to the College World Series.
