RHP Jimmy Cordero claimed off waivers by White Sox

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that right-handed pitcher Jimmy Cordero has been claimed off waivers by the Chicago White Sox.

Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, is now at 39 players.

Cordero, 27, was claimed off waivers from Toronto on May 27 and assigned to AAA Tacoma. His assignment was transferred to AA Arkansas on May 30. He appeared in 1 game with the Travelers on June 1 vs. Tulsa, allowing 1 hit and issuing 4 walks while striking out 1 in 0.2 innings pitched. He was designated for assignment by Toronto on May 23. He pitched in 1 game with the Blue Jays, taking the loss on May 22 after allowing 1 run in 1.1 innings of relief vs. Boston. Prior to his recall to Toronto on May 21, he appeared in 1 game with AAA Buffalo, earning the win with a shutout inning pitched (2 strikeouts). He was claimed off waivers by the Jays from Washington on May 15 after being designated for assignment by the Nationals on May 9. Prior to being designated by Washington, he made 12 appearances with Triple-A Fresno and was 0-1, 6.00 (10 ER, 15.0 IP) with 3 saves.

Cordero made his Major League debut with the Nationals on Aug. 2, 2018 vs. Cincinnati and posted a 1-2, 5.68 (19.0 IP, 12 ER) in 22 games in two Major League stints. He was 4-1, 1.96 (10 ER, 46.0 IP) with 6 saves in 41 games at AAA Syracuse. In parts of 8 minor league seasons with the Blue Jays, Phillies, Nationals and Mariners, he is 17-20 with a 4.15 ERA (131 ER, 284.1 IP) with 279 strikeouts and 156 walks in 211 appearances (5 GS). The San Cristobal, DR native began his pro career in the Dominican Summer League with the Toronto Blue Jays.
